A tooth that has already had a root canal can sometimes become painful or infected again. When that happens, the tooth does not always need to be extracted. In appropriate cases, root canal retreatment may give the tooth another opportunity to be saved.

At Farwest Dental Group, PC, we provide evaluation and root canal treatment and retreatment for patients at our four Southern California locations in Lomita, Wilmington, Compton, and Los Angeles on Manchester Ave.

We also welcome Medi-Cal Dental patients and can help patients understand their available dental benefits before treatment.

What Is Root Canal Retreatment?

Root canal retreatment is a procedure performed on a tooth that has previously received root canal therapy but later develops a new or persistent problem.

During the original root canal, infected or damaged tissue is removed from inside the tooth, the canals are cleaned, and the tooth is sealed. Although root canal treatment can be very successful, some teeth may require additional treatment later.

Root canal retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous root canal filling materials when appropriate, carefully cleaning and disinfecting the canals again, and resealing the tooth.

The goal is to address the source of the problem and, whenever clinically appropriate, preserve the natural tooth.

Why Would a Root Canal Need to Be Retreated?

A previously treated tooth may develop symptoms months or even years after the original procedure.

Possible reasons include:

  • New decay around the tooth or restoration

  • Recurrent infection

  • A canal that was difficult to locate or treat during the original procedure

  • Leakage beneath a filling or crown

  • A cracked or damaged restoration

  • New bacterial contamination

  • Persistent inflammation around the root

  • Continued pain or tenderness after previous root canal therapy

Every situation is different. A clinical examination and dental imaging are needed to determine whether retreatment, another procedure, or extraction is the appropriate option.

Symptoms That May Require Evaluation

If you previously had a root canal and are experiencing discomfort, it is important to have the tooth evaluated.

Symptoms may include persistent tooth pain, pain when biting or chewing, swelling of the gum, tenderness around the tooth, a recurring gum pimple or drainage, sensitivity, or swelling of the face or jaw.

Some infections may produce very few symptoms, which is another reason regular dental examinations and X-rays can be important.

Can a Previously Root-Canal-Treated Tooth Be Saved?

In many cases, a previously treated tooth may still be treatable.

The decision depends on factors such as the condition of the tooth, the amount of remaining tooth structure, the location and extent of infection, previous treatment, fractures, periodontal condition, and whether the tooth can be properly restored afterward.

At Farwest Dental Group, PC, we evaluate the tooth and discuss appropriate treatment options with the patient before proceeding.

Our objective is to preserve natural teeth when clinically reasonable while helping patients understand all available options.

Root Canal Retreatment for Medi-Cal Dental Patients

We understand that access to dental care is especially important when a patient is experiencing tooth pain or infection.

Farwest Dental Group, PC welcomes Medi-Cal Dental patients at participating locations and can help review eligibility and available benefits.

Coverage for specific procedures, including root canal treatment or retreatment, may depend on the patient's Medi-Cal Dental benefits, clinical circumstances, required documentation, and authorization requirements.

Our staff can help patients understand the administrative process before treatment whenever possible.

Don't Ignore Pain in a Previously Treated Tooth

If a tooth that previously received a root canal begins hurting again, delaying evaluation can allow an infection or other problem to become more complicated.

Pain after a previous root canal does not automatically mean the tooth has to be extracted.

A dental examination can help determine whether root canal retreatment or another treatment may be appropriate.
